Discursive Formation in Old Boy

The theme I am choosing from Old Boy is the theme of monstrosity. Monstrosity is very very visible in this film in many ways. The main character, Oh Dae Su is locked away in a room for 15 years so obviously he becomes insane and almost like a monster. He even started to see ants crawling out of his skin and starts to look like a monster. Another example of this is that he goes throughout the entire movie killing anyone who gets in his way (like a monster would). He also pulls out some of their teeth in a very gruesome way. The movie ends with him finding out Mido is actually his daughter and in order for her not to find out, the acts like a dog and starts licking a man's feet. The discursive formation is created in this movie from this theme. The discursive formation that is created is the idea that being in that room for 15 years causes him to become a monster, which is shown through the actions explained above.

Kevin Hart and Semiotics

For this weeks blog post I will be explain semiotics and how it has to do with Kevin Harts Hyundai Commercial. Semiotics is sort of hard to explain but it is the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. Language creates myths that we have to understand in our minds. Kevin Hart starred in a super bowl Hyundai commerical that is a good example of this concept. In this commerical Kevin Harts daughter goes out on a date and takes her dads car. What the commerical shows is that Kevin can track his daughter on his apple watch. Kevin follows her on her date and you can immediatly tell his is a protective dad that cares about his daughter.  In this commerical the signified is the main idea that Hyundai cars are reliable and trustworthy. In my opinion the signifier in this commerical would be the car because it is the center of the advertisement and is used to show the theme.

Pocket Points- Gamification To Our Advantage

For this week's blog post about gamification, I decided to write about an app called "Pocket Points" that I am familiar with. If you aren't familiar with Pocket Points, you should be. Pocket Points is an app that will give you coupons just for not being on your phone. At the start of class, you go on the app and set how long your class is. If you do not unlock your phone in that time Pockets Points gives you a certain amount of points. Those points add up and you can use them to redeem coupons to retailers on the app. The possibilities for coupons are endless. They have food, entertainment, clothing businesses and more. You can also earn points for safe driving! They can track when your driving and give you points for when you aren't on your phone. They recently set up a way for teachers in middle school or high school to control rewards students are given so this can be a great resource for teachers looking for ways to get students to focus. This is an excellent...

The Great British Baking Show

Today I decided to talk about The Great British Baking Show. I was scrolling through my list on Netflix, and The Great British Baking Show is the first thing I came across that could be considered global media. The Great British Baking Show is exactly what it sounds like. Its great, its british, and its a baking show! I've been obsessed with the show since a friend of mine got me into it last year. Its an awesome show to watch when you just want a stress free show you don't have to think too hard about. This content appeals to me because its so easy to watch and its fun to watch what they make and learn baking techniques. This show can teach me many things about british culture. The show is hosted by a couple british celebrities and baking experts who use very british vocab in the way they speak. Its so entertaining to hear the different words and sayings british people use. Of course, its all about the food. Some of the dishes they make people from the U.S. would be familiar w...
