Semester Review

It became easier Throughout the course of this semester, I’ve gone through many ups and downs with writing. After graduating from high school, I thought I was a pretty good writer. I took college compositive my senior year and got really good grades, so I wasn’t that worried about writing in college. Well let me tell you, I was knocked down a few pegs my freshman year of college. Now I think I’m an okay writer, but I definitely do struggle a bit. I took this class to fulfill requirements for my communication minor, and really I don’t plan on being a journalist, but I did learn skills in this class that will help me with writing in general during my future career.              I’ve learned how important non-biased writing is and how damaging biased writing can be on both the article and public opinion. When writing news articles as a journalist it’s incredibly important to double and triple-check that sources are very ...

Finding The Right Fit

My Experience The environment of plus size women in fashion has always been an interest of mine and something I could talk all day about. This is probably because I am one of these women, and I’m about to pursue a career in a business that doesn’t always appreciate women like me. In this short opinion article today I’ll be telling you about my experience, and what plus size fashion is like today.  As a little girl, I would go shopping with my friends at the mall on a Saturday and we would have so much fun trying on outfits and buying things we didn’t need with our small allowances. Except, it was never as much fun for me. All the stores we would go into never carried things that fit me right, some of them didn’t even sell my size. I would still watch my friends try on clothes and we would have fun picking out things, but I always felt so terrible about myself because of it.  I’ll never forget when I started to finally discover brands that catered to my body type and sol...

Week 12 Newswriting

Erin Smith- 3/13 CBS Broadcast  At the White House today, Trump declared the United States in a national emergency because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House will be launching a new website that should aid people in getting tested for the virus. Trump also announced that the government will be allotted 50 million dollars to go to the states for treatment facilities and supplies. The next eight weeks are critical, with cases in the US now at 2,100 and at least 50 people have died.  President Trump says he will be tested for COVID-19, after he was in close contact with a Brazillian official who has tested positive. Trump also adds that he will not partake in self-quarantine, even though he is encouraging Americans to do so. Even as he took several actions and asked all hospitals in the country to launch their emergency response plans, he urges Americans to have hope.  The house has come to a consensus on a plan, Nancy Pelosi says that the deal is do...

Week 11 Newswriting

Honestly, I have no idea how I'm going to write about my voice when I don't know what it is. Writing doesn't come easily to me, and I tend to be more informational and have less personality in my writing. It's unclear to me why I have a hard time with this, especially because my personality in person is prominent.  I am going to work through finding my voice by writing more casually with the assignments in this class and less like I'm writing a paper. It's hard to get out of my head and just plain write what I feel. I think I have a hard time with it just because I always have so many thoughts in my head at one time and I can’t get them down fast enough without forgetting something.  I want to write for people my age, college-age women and men who are interested in the business of fashion both locally and globally. Because my voice isn't super prominent, (right now) I would easily be able to write about both casual and serious events without seeming inap...

Week 11 Journal

I've decided to go with fashion journalism as my beat. I enjoy writing about local businesses and news having to do with the apparel industry, and I also enjoy writing about not so local high fashion shows and global fashion news as well. I haven't done a lot of writing about fashion, but what I have written I have enjoyed. Honestly, I haven't written a lot of any topic so I'm choosing fashion to focus on. I'm hoping to get better at writing about this topic and I hope it will help me prepare for the industry I want to work in even more. 1) Courtney Schur Owner/Manager Carmine and Hayworth Vintage (701)-541-2041 carmineandhayworth@gmail.com 2) Pamela Kinslow Owner/Manager Violet Vintage (701)-478-4525 violetvintage62@gmail.com Pamela is a vintage story owner I got to know being in the Fargo area last year. Week 10 Newswriting

Shattered Glass is the true story of Stephen Glass, an associate editor of the political magazine “The New Republic”, who in 1998 it was discovered that he fabricated 27 of his stories for the magazine. This movie came out in 2004 and Peter Sarsgaard won a Golden Globe for best-supporting actor from his part in the film. The movie directly correlates to the true story very well. After watching the movie, I read the Vanity Fair article “Shattered Glass” that it’s based on and they include almost every detail of the story in the movie, except for Stephen's high school experience. Even the dialogue from the important conversations is word for word from real life to the movie. In high school, Stephen Glass was a theater lover and served as technical director for a couple high school productions written by students. One of which was about a Washington journalist caught in a web of corruption. Glass also participated in an activity called “Adventures of the Mind” that challenged intell...
