My Experience
The environment of plus size women in fashion has always been an interest of mine and something I could talk all day about. This is probably because I am one of these women, and I’m about to pursue a career in a business that doesn’t always appreciate women like me. In this short opinion article today I’ll be telling you about my experience, and what plus size fashion is like today.
As a little girl, I would go shopping with my friends at the mall on a Saturday and we would have so much fun trying on outfits and buying things we didn’t need with our small allowances. Except, it was never as much fun for me. All the stores we would go into never carried things that fit me right, some of them didn’t even sell my size. I would still watch my friends try on clothes and we would have fun picking out things, but I always felt so terrible about myself because of it.
I’ll never forget when I started to finally discover brands that catered to my body type and sold fashionable things I was actually excited to wear. I started exclusively shopping at places I knew would have items that fit me. Shopping started to become more of a happy experience, rather than hating myself in the dressing room is a dress didn’t fit right. I wish shopping and picking out outfits could have been a happy experience when I was younger too.
Even today, after I have found so many amazing brands I love to shop from that cater to women like me, I still feel like an outsider sometimes. Me and my college friends love to look into all the cute boutiques in downtown Fargo, and they always have the most unique clothes, but not for me, never for me. So many women feel like this and so many little girls had the same childhood experiences as me, and many of us are starting to refuse to feel that way. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and everyone is worthy of wearing clothes that they love.
Today’s Brands
Lately I’ve been wondering, why is “plus-size” even a term that exists? I hate using it. I hate that I have to use that term throughout this whole article because it’s what we are used to and it distinguishes us from “normal” size women. We want the same clothing that other women want. Contrary to an old-fashioned way of thinking, most of us curvier girls actually love our bodies and want to wear the same clothing that other women do. Many older exclusively plus size brands would sell plainer and more modest clothing that would age any women who put them on. That is not what we want anymore. We want to be young, trendy and stylish and even show off our bodies. There is a body positivity revolution going on with women all over the world. We are proud.
Because of this self-love revolution, fashion has been evolving very quickly in the past few years and today there are so many brands that offer stylish clothing to plus size women, even high fashion brands! Full inclusivity for plus size women in high fashion still has a ways to go, but there are so many amazing brands working towards this goal. Brands like Zelie, Elloquii, Premme, and 11Honore make high fashion clothing catered towards curvy women (self.com).
Brands are starting to realize, that without inclusive sizing, they are leaving out an entire customer base that could make them so much money. 67% of women in the United States are a size 14 (retaildive.com). So many clothing lines only make up to size 10. Just this year, brands like Adidas, American Eagle, and Anthropologie, who didn’t have extended sizes, added sizes to grow their customer base and are glad they did (glamour.com).
I work as a sale associate at a plus size clothing store “Torrid”, which has over 400 stores nationwide and in Canada. Just having worked there for 8 months, everyday I talk to women who want to feel beautiful and want to find fashionable clothes that fit them right. Some women come into our store for the first time and they are in awe that all these trendy clothes actually come in their size. Dozens of women just try on pieces because they have never found an off the shoulder top or a sexy top that actually fits them! Torrid is one of a few companies that are continuing to grow quickly because so many women finally find shopping for clothing to be enjoyable.
