Rebel Wilson was awarded 4.56 million dollars after she won a libel lawsuit against Bauer Media in Australia. She claimed they had published a story that fabricated her life and lied about her age, upbringing, and origin of her name. Wilson said after that it wasn't about the money for her and she planned on donating the money to charities. The defense was purely that they claimed it was the truth.

In 2017 Rolling stone was faced with a defamation suit after they published a story implying that three University of Virginia Phi Kappa Psi members allegedly took part in raping another student at a fraternity party. The article was written by Sabrina Rubin and was about the girl who identified as "Jackie" and was allegedly raped. The case was at first dismissed and then the ruling was overturned by a higher court and the case was opened again. The judges ruled that some of the evidence was opinion, and therefore cannot be a claim for libel. The defense here was that the prosecution's evidence was opinion.

Daily mail was under a lawsuit from Melania Trump after they wrote a story reporting allegations that she worked as an escort. The story was published during Trumps election. In a statement, Melania said she "will remain vigilant to protect her good name and reputation." Daily mail acknowledged in their apology that they had published allegations that she did more than modeling. It seems there was no defense in this case.

South Dakota meat processor beef products Inc. sued ABC news anchor Diane Sawyer and reporter Jim Avila over a series of stories about "pink slime", claiming the processor's goods were unsafe and the company's business was hurt as a result. ABC News settled the lawsuit with 1.9 million dollars. If ABC had gone to trial, they faced nearing 6 million dollars in damages under a food libel law in South Dakota. Even though ABC settled the case, they have stood by their reporting and denied lying. The defense, in this case, is the truth, because ABC denied having lied the whole time.

After a six-week-long trial, Gibsons Bakery in Ohio was awarded 33.2 million after they won a lawsuit against Oberlin College. They sued the college and the dean of students after a shoplifting incident led to allegations that the business practiced racial profiling. The allegations prompted protests by students, that the bakery said were supported by faculty. William Jacobson, a law professor at Cornell University explains the defense perfectly. He stated, "this historic ruling confirms that no institution, no matter how powerful, may baselessly smear individuals or businesses in pursuit of their political or social agenda."

David Schwimmer won a defamation case of $400,000 after he sued Aaron Token, a manager for a charity fundraiser. David filed the lawsuits against Aaron because of statements he said claiming David demanded two Rolex watches to attend his own charity event. Token has retracted the statements and apologized to the actor, according to Schwimmers publicist. There was no defense in this case because Token admitted to having lied.

Jerry Seinfeld was sued in 2011 because of statements he said about the author Missy Chase Lapine about how she was a "wacko" and a "nutjob." He said these statements on the David Letterman show. The judge on this case stated Seinfeilds statements are protected because they were made in a comedic context and they are not defamatory in a matter of law.  The judge dismissed this case because there weren't enough bases for defamatory allegations.

In 2013, Jay Leno was sued for defamation of character because he said a joke on air that implied accusations of bestiality about former flight attendant, Louann Giambattista. The joke stemmed from another lawsuit Giambattista filed against her employer in which she said that her co-workers had falsely said that "she was carrying her pet rats onto work flights, and concealing them in her pantyhose or underwear." Giambattista claimed that the accusations made her and her husband pariahs in their own community. This case was dismissed as not enough substance for a lawsuit so there was no defense in this case.

This article is about another slander case that got dismissed, I had a hard time finding any slander cases with actual defense. The dismissed case was a $30 million slander lawsuit against the U.S. anti-doping agency filed by the former group of disgraced sprinters Marion Jones, Justin Gatlin, and Tina Montgomery. The lawsuit was concerning allegations that the coaches gave performance-enhancing drugs to athletes. Although the athletes admitted to having taken banned substances, they said they did not get the substances from their coaches.

In 2012 a Los Angeles jury $20 million to billionaire casino mogul Steve Wynn in his slander suit against "girls gone wild" creator Joe Francis. The trial was centered on Francis' claim that Wynn had threatened his life in an email and in-person concerning gambling debt. Wynn then sued him because he said the claim was false and Francis' was ruining his reputation. In court jurors sided with Wynn. The defense, in this case, was simply the truth, Francis' believes/believed he was telling the truth.

Semester Review

It became easier Throughout the course of this semester, I’ve gone through many ups and downs with writing. After graduating from high school, I thought I was a pretty good writer. I took college compositive my senior year and got really good grades, so I wasn’t that worried about writing in college. Well let me tell you, I was knocked down a few pegs my freshman year of college. Now I think I’m an okay writer, but I definitely do struggle a bit. I took this class to fulfill requirements for my communication minor, and really I don’t plan on being a journalist, but I did learn skills in this class that will help me with writing in general during my future career.              I’ve learned how important non-biased writing is and how damaging biased writing can be on both the article and public opinion. When writing news articles as a journalist it’s incredibly important to double and triple-check that sources are very ...
