Week 3 Journal

   1)      To what extent do we learn these ideas of right & wrong from our environment?    To what extent is this morality intrinsic, i.e., present in us from birth? We as people learn what is right and wrong from how we were raised and also the environment and people we surround ourselves with. Morality is not with us at our birth. Children learn simple morals from their parents and teachers growing up. Simple morals such as please and thank you, sharing, treat others the way you wish to be treated, etc. If a child grew up learning from someone that it is okay to be disrespectful, they would learn it is okay. Bigger picture opinions are also learned from parents but also from the environment a child grows up in. For instance, if someone's parents have always believed that marriage should be between a man and a woman, the person is likely to take on the same morals. The environment a person is in has a big impact on morals too. An example ...

Week 2 Newswriting

Philip Defranco is a YouTuber and news commentator whom I have been following for about three years now. When I started getting interested in politics his daily videos were a great source of political news for me. I chose Defranco because I rely on him a lot to understand exactly what's going on and how it happened. I follow him because he explains every topic very well and includes world news along with political news. When I took AP gov in high school I would read the news and try and understand exactly what political events took place and why they were happening and Defranco always helped me understand and comprehend better. I also like that he tries his best to be unbiased in his reporting. He is open about the fact that he will lean liberal, but always give his audience all the facts they need to have their own opinions. He could include more world news in his reporting. In high school, I would watch Philip Defranco videos with my friend Maggie and we would always add our ow...

He does daily news shows about politics and world news. Dylan Marron is a writer and LGBTQ activist. Dylan writes about the impact the internet has on hate and recently gave a ted talk about empathy. Week 1- Journal

Bias is a prominent topic and problem in modern journalism, especially political journalism. Everyone has different life experiences that cause us all to have conflicting opinions that can affect our writing. There are many elements of a person's background that can lead to bias. The way a person is raised in childhood and the type of people they were around can affect how they see the world. For instance, if a child's parents are politically conservative or religiously conservative, most of the time that child will also adopt those beliefs. Bias can also be caused by who the person is as far as race, class, gender and sexual orientation. A straight white male is likely to have different beliefs than someone who is female, African American or transgender, etc. Another element of one's background that can cause bias is life experiences. For example, a soldier who has been on the front lines of war is more likely to have strong opinions about government spending on military ...

Week 1 Newswriting

My name is Erin Smith and I hail from Hutchinson Minnesota. Hutchinson is about an hour west of the twin cities and is a medium/small town of 15 thousand people. This is my second year at NDSU and I love this school just as much as I did when on the first day. I chose to go to NDSU because it is one of three schools in the midwest that has my area of study and the tuition is affordable compared to other colleges. The other reason I chose to go here is that Fargo is a great college town with a lot of funs tuff to do and it hasn't disappointed me yet! I am taking this class mostly because it is required for my Communication minor but, I think this class is going to help my writing skills a lot. My major is Apparel Retail Merchandising which is a very small major here at NDSU. Only about 20 freshmen come in as Apparel majors every year and a lot of people switch majors later on. So if you haven't met an Apparel major, I wouldn't be surprised. Apparel Merchandising is not Appa...
