Week 1 Newswriting

My name is Erin Smith and I hail from Hutchinson Minnesota. Hutchinson is about an hour west of the twin cities and is a medium/small town of 15 thousand people. This is my second year at NDSU and I love this school just as much as I did when on the first day. I chose to go to NDSU because it is one of three schools in the midwest that has my area of study and the tuition is affordable compared to other colleges. The other reason I chose to go here is that Fargo is a great college town with a lot of funs tuff to do and it hasn't disappointed me yet! I am taking this class mostly because it is required for my Communication minor but, I think this class is going to help my writing skills a lot. My major is Apparel Retail Merchandising which is a very small major here at NDSU. Only about 20 freshmen come in as Apparel majors every year and a lot of people switch majors later on. So if you haven't met an Apparel major, I wouldn't be surprised. Apparel Merchandising is not Apparel design, it is everything that entails the business side of fashion. I'm required to know aspects of fashion such as product design, visual merchandising, textile science, garment construction, history of dress, and much more. After college, I am unsure of what I want to do but right now I am interested in a job in the product development business. In my opinion, the correct way to eat a PB and J  sandwich is to put a good amount of peanut butter on one side of the bread, and then a thin layer on the other side, and the jam in the middle. The reason for doing peanut butter on both sides is to make sure the jam doesn't leak through the bread. My preferred type of jam is Raspberry and I love crunchy peanut butter. Lastly, the sandwich should be cut diagonally and all crusts should be eaten. As a person, I am super reliable and even if I don't know how to do something I will always ask too many questions and get the job done. I can offer an insight into fashion and creativity that I feel is unique to me. I'm really interested in writing about politics and learning about how to do so in this class and expand my writing skills in general. At this time I feel like my writing skills are not at the college journalism level. One of the worst movies ever made on planet earth is Spacejam. I'm in the marching band here at NDSU and its tradition that we watch Spacejam on the bus to Frisco every year. So therefore, I am very aware that it is a terrible movie. Another terrible movie is Good burger. A couple things you should know about me are that I was born in Dallas Oregon and moved to Minnesota when I was four. I have broken my arm four times (three times on the left, once on the right) and I am obsessed with frogs. In order for me to do my best in this class, it would be helpful to have detail instructions for each assignment and outlines reguarding how the assignment is graded. I feel that in order for me to do well in this class I need to write about what I am passionate about, so having assignments that we get to choose the subject would be helpful.

Comments

  1. We're going to have to fight about SpaceJam. I noticed a couple issues throughout, a missing comma after Hutchinson, a missing comma after "So" when you start a sentence, another one was word choice. While describing yourself as super reliable is fine in conversation, it doesn't lend itself an air of credibility in writing. I try to keep all the assignments vague enough so that you can choose whatever content you please, but if you need any clarification or structure, let me know. This was a good starting point for our course.

Semester Review

It became easier Throughout the course of this semester, I’ve gone through many ups and downs with writing. After graduating from high school, I thought I was a pretty good writer. I took college compositive my senior year and got really good grades, so I wasn’t that worried about writing in college. Well let me tell you, I was knocked down a few pegs my freshman year of college. Now I think I’m an okay writer, but I definitely do struggle a bit. I took this class to fulfill requirements for my communication minor, and really I don’t plan on being a journalist, but I did learn skills in this class that will help me with writing in general during my future career.              I’ve learned how important non-biased writing is and how damaging biased writing can be on both the article and public opinion. When writing news articles as a journalist it’s incredibly important to double and triple-check that sources are very ...
