Week 7 Journal

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/woman-bladder-alcohol-brewing_n_5e5558afc5b6a718cdce8faf  The first article I found is titled, "Doctors Discover Booze Brewing in Sober Woman's Bladder." A 61-year-old woman from Pennsylvania was seeking a liver transplant and caused quite the shock when doctors discovered the presence of alcohol in her bladder. She insisted that she had not been drinking. Eventually, doctors discovered that the real trouble was that her liver was producing alcohol on its own. Urinary Auto Brewery Syndrome is a condition in which a person's urine produces too much sugar and yeast- the two key ingredients for fermentation. This case helps doctors to see how easily the syndrome can be overlooked. https://www.foxnews.com/us/washington-state-lost-sea-lion A 600-pound sea lion was found along a road in Washington State on Sunday, far away from any water. Officials believe the sea lion had ventured too far from its normal waters but traveling up a near...

Week 6 Newswriting

The first misquote I found was by Martin Luther King. When a person searches for Martin Luther King quotes, they might stumble across "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy." This was actually never said by Dr. King. Nick Ramsey from MSNBC did some research one this and found a longer quote that includes said misquote but he couldn't find any journalist reliable sources. He then came across an article by The Atlantic. Apparently, the quote was originally posted by a Facebook user as she was leading up to an actual Dr. King quote and people mistook it for something he said.  It is widely known that Gandhi once said, “be the change you wish to see in the world.” What he actually said is “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him.” Brian Morton from The New York Times found o...

Week 6 Journal

Backtrack Journal #1 Where did you first see it? I first saw this article because a democratic Facebook group that I am involved in shared the link on Facebook. Who (or what) brought it to your attention? It was an eye-catching picture of the tall pillars at the Minneapolis Institute of Art covered in bright orange life jackets and the picture makes you want to read the article. It also caught my attention because it relates to refugee issues. Who created it? -Star Tribune -The Star Tribune is a newspaper based out of Minneapolis Minnesota that covers Minnesota events and Minnesota political news. The tribune is said to lean slightly to the left. The Star Tribune company is owned by Glen Taylor, who also owns the Minnesota Timberwolves. - http://www.startribune.com/for-exhibit-about-migration-minneapolis-museum-wraps-its-white-facade-in-colorful-life-jackets/568012332/    Trace the timeline, compiling links from the originating content to your...

Week 5 Newswriting

Martina Swartwood (goes by Tina) is a Sophmore at NDSU majoring in Industrial Engineering. This semester she got a job as a Resident Assistant in Weible, one of NDSU's low rise freshman dorms. I decided to interview her about her free time and various things involving. Because of everything an RA has to do, Tina doesn't have tons of free time. Most of the free time she does have is taken up by homework, answering questions from residents and sleeping. Living in a dorm does help her to stay closer to people and make more friends, because being around people all the time "makes you social, you can't live in your room forever and you have to leave to eat" Tina said. Campus groups such as Campus Attractions and the Residence Hall Association put on various events throughout the year, Tina enjoys going to grocery bag bingo, Pinterest night and the pajama jam because she makes friends with the people sitting around her. Being that Tina is a STEM major, I asked her what...

Week 4 Newswriting

I can already tell this story is going to be easy to write about because it infuriates me. CNN and other news organizations have always been a target of "fake news" accusations from Donald Trump since he started his campaign for president. But on November 7th, 2018 Trump held a press conference at the white house the day after the midterm elections, and his behavior went directly against the first amendment to the constitution. Trump had a couple hostile interactions with other journalists, but his most controversial exchange was with Jim Acosta. Jim Acosta is one of the main political journalists for CNN, he was sitting front row of the press conference, and Trump chose him to ask a question. Acosta started to ask his first question and before he could even finish asking it, Trump leaned into the mic and said "here we go." Acosta first brought up an event about migrants traveling from Central America towards the southern border and asked why Trump had characterize...

Libel: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2017/09/13/its-important-to-stand-up-to-bullies-rebel-wilson-wins-record-amount-in-defamation-case/  Rebel Wilson was awarded 4.56 million dollars after she won a libel lawsuit against Bauer Media in Australia. She claimed they had published a story that fabricated her life and lied about her age, upbringing, and origin of her name. Wilson said after that it wasn't about the money for her and she planned on donating the money to charities. The defense was purely that they claimed it was the truth. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/09/19/552090031/fraternity-members-defamation-case-against-rolling-stone-can-proceed-court-says In 2017 Rolling stone was faced with a defamation suit after they published a story implying that three University of Virginia Phi Kappa Psi members allegedly took part in raping another student at a fraternity party. Week 3 Newswriting

Chelsea Patterson Sobolik wrote this opinion article for USA Today earlier in 2019 titled, "I'm pro-life. That means protecting the unborn from abortion and also caring for women." I disagree with every idea she states in this article. She writes about how those engaging in the abortion debate have made this into a binary choice, either you care for women or you care for the unborn child, and she says that she cares about both. In my mind, these two statements are contradicting. Not allowing a woman to continue her life and forcing her to birth a child is not caring for that woman. Forcing a women to give birth to children they can't take care off will ruin their lives and also the lives of the children put into the US foster care system. So many children are never adopted and have foster parents who only take part for the money. Sobolik talks about how her birth mother put her up for adoption and she was adopted by a loving family, but what she doesn't realize i...
