Week 2 Newswriting

Philip Defranco is a YouTuber and news commentator whom I have been following for about three years now. When I started getting interested in politics his daily videos were a great source of political news for me. I chose Defranco because I rely on him a lot to understand exactly what's going on and how it happened. I follow him because he explains every topic very well and includes world news along with political news. When I took AP gov in high school I would read the news and try and understand exactly what political events took place and why they were happening and Defranco always helped me understand and comprehend better. I also like that he tries his best to be unbiased in his reporting. He is open about the fact that he will lean liberal, but always give his audience all the facts they need to have their own opinions. He could include more world news in his reporting. In high school, I would watch Philip Defranco videos with my friend Maggie and we would always add our own comments about what was going on in the world at that time. Not to mention he always includes a segment titled "today in awesome" in which he reports something good going on that day, which is a ray of sunshine through all the other stories.

  1. Thanks for the insight into someone so helpful for you. Breaking your work into paragraphs can help your readers follow along much more easily than a block of text does. I'm also not sure that starting a sentence with 'not to mention' makes much sense. It's not needed when you're introducing something else he is known for.

Semester Review

It became easier Throughout the course of this semester, I’ve gone through many ups and downs with writing. After graduating from high school, I thought I was a pretty good writer. I took college compositive my senior year and got really good grades, so I wasn’t that worried about writing in college. Well let me tell you, I was knocked down a few pegs my freshman year of college. Now I think I’m an okay writer, but I definitely do struggle a bit. I took this class to fulfill requirements for my communication minor, and really I don’t plan on being a journalist, but I did learn skills in this class that will help me with writing in general during my future career.              I’ve learned how important non-biased writing is and how damaging biased writing can be on both the article and public opinion. When writing news articles as a journalist it’s incredibly important to double and triple-check that sources are very ...
