ACLU Sues Texas Cities
The ACLU of Texas filed a lawsuit challenging seven cities in Texas that prohibit abortion providers and advocates from operating within the cities. The ACLU is representing two organizations- Lilith Fund and Texas Equal Access Fun- who are labeled "criminal entities" by the cities for their pro-abortion views. Their lawsuit says that the ordinances violate their rights to free expression and association protected under the first amendment. The lawsuit also says that by designating them as "criminal" is illegally imposing punishment without a fair trial. Brigitte Amiri from the ACLU Reproductive freedom project said, "these anti-abortion ordinances are a part of a nationwide attack on abortion access." The ACLU's goal is to make sure every Texan knows their rights and can find information about getting an abortion regardless of zip code. In the last year, the ACLU has successfully blocked unconstitutional abortion bands and restrictions in other states. The suit is being brought by the ACLU of Texas, the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, and the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

Student Names NASA's Rover
Thomas Zurbuchen recently announced the name of the next Mars rover. The Rover was named Perseverance by a seventh-grader named Alexander Mather, who won a writing competition that received 28,000 entries from K-12 students in every state. Alex's entry captured the spirit of exploration according to judges. The Rover "Perseverance" is the latest in a long line of Red Plant rovers to be named by school-age children since 1997. For this competition, nearly 4,700 volunteer judges, educators, and professionals reviewed submissions to help narrow the pool now to 155 semifinalists. They then nailed it down to 9 finalists, and the public had five days to vote which they liked the most online. Along with naming the Rover, Mather and his family will also be invited to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida to witness the river begin its journey.
Make sure you're reading your work aloud, I'm not sure what an abortion band is, but I don't want to listen to it.
ReplyDeleteI also can't imagine a river journeying out of Cape Canaveral would bring that many people to observe.
